American pop star Britney Spears was arrested in Los Angeles on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol.
According to a report by a foreign news agency, the 44-year-old singer was taken into custody by the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department on Wednesday night on suspicion of intoxicated driving.
However, she was released from police custody on Thursday morning, a development confirmed by legal documents and reports from U.S. media outlets.
Reports say that on the evening of March 4, the California Highway Patrol received information about a black BMW that was allegedly speeding. When officers stopped the vehicle, the only person inside was Britney Spears.
Police stated that she showed signs of intoxication and was asked to perform several field sobriety tests at the scene. She was then arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and taken to a nearby hospital, where a blood sample was collected to determine the level of alcohol in her system.
Spears was booked at the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office at around 3 a.m. and was released on bail at approximately 6 a.m.
According to police, the incident was unfortunate and unacceptable. Authorities said the singer assured them she would fully comply with the law and hoped the situation would lead to positive changes in her life.
Britney Spears rose to fame in the late 1990s with her hit song “...Baby One More Time.” In recent years, however, she has largely stepped away from the music scene.
