Former prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan underwent the second phase of his eye treatment at Islamabad’s Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) on February 24.
Doctors declared him medically stable before and after the procedure, confirming that his vision has further improved.
According to a medical update issued by PIMS Executive Director Dr. Imran Sikandar, 74-year-old Imran Khan was brought from Central Jail Adiala for a follow-up eye treatment — the second dose of anti-VEGF intravitreal injection.
The procedure was performed in the same operation theatre at PIMS where his first injection was administered on the night between January 24 and 25. The second injection was given exactly one month later, as advised by doctors after observing improvement in his eyesight following the first dose.
The injection was administered under microscopic guidance by Consultant Ophthalmologist Dr. Muhammad Arif and Consultant Vitreo-Retinal Surgeon Dr. Nadeem Qureshi of Al-Shifa Eye Trust Hospital. The surgery was conducted as a day care procedure under strict standard operating protocols.
Medical board examination before procedure
Before undergoing the injection, Imran Khan was examined by a board of specialists.
A consultant cardiologist performed an ECG and echocardiography, both of which returned normal results. He was also assessed by a consultant physician. Following these evaluations, he was declared clinically stable and medically fit for the procedure.
According to the official statement, the injection was administered after obtaining his formal informed consent. All precautionary measures and standard protocols were adopted in the operation theatre.
Stable throughout surgery
Doctors confirmed that Imran Khan remained vitally stable before, during, and after the procedure. After completion of the injection, he was shifted from the operation theatre to the recovery room. He was later discharged in satisfactory condition along with care instructions, follow-up advice, and relevant medical documents.
Dr Sikandar stated that the PTI founder was completely stable throughout his stay at PIMS, which lasted approximately one and a half hours.
Tight security outside hospital
Imran Khan was taken to PIMS under strict security arrangements on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday. Sources said he was transported in a convoy of more than 10 vehicles. He was brought into the hospital through a back entrance and taken to the VI ward under a security cordon.
After the procedure and recovery, he was handed over to Adiala Jail authorities and shifted back to Adiala Jail late at night.
Vision improving
According to doctors, Imran Khan’s eyesight has further improved following the second injection. Sources added that the PTI founder himself expressed satisfaction to the doctors, stating that his vision is getting better and he can see more clearly now.
The second phase of the eye procedure was conducted as part of a planned treatment schedule after noticeable improvement following the first injection.
Reaction from PTI leadership
PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan stated that he was informed via message at around 2pm that Imran Khan had been brought to PIMS for an injection.
He said he had no prior information about the PTI founder being taken to the hospital. He reiterated the party’s longstanding demand that medical check-ups and treatment should be conducted in the presence of doctors and family members.
The first eye procedure was carried out on the intervening night of January 24 and 25 at PIMS. Following improvement in vision, doctors advised a second injection after one month.
With the second dose now administered successfully, the PTI founder has returned to Adiala Jail with follow-up medical instructions.
