WhatsApp has introduced a highly anticipated update that makes it easier for new participants in group chats to catch up with recent conversations.
The messaging platform’s new Group Message History feature lets group admins and members share selected past messages with someone who has just been added to a group, providing useful context without needing screenshots or lengthy explanations.
Under the new system, when a user is added to a group chat, admins (and in some cases members with permission) will be able to send between 25 and 100 of the most recent messages to them. These shared messages are clearly marked with timestamps and sender details, so everyone — both new and existing members — can easily understand what’s been shared.
The feature remains end‑to‑end encrypted, like all regular WhatsApp chats, ensuring that message privacy is not compromised. Admins also have the option to disable this catch‑up function for groups that prefer not to use it. Whenever message history is shared, all group members are notified, adding transparency to the process.
WhatsApp says the Group Message History feature is being rolled out gradually on both Android and iOS devices, so not all users may see it immediately. Once fully deployed, it’s expected to streamline group interactions and help new members join conversations with more context than ever before.
