Finnish eyewear company IXI is preparing to launch a pair of smart glasses that look ordinary but offer an “auto-focus” feature tailored to the wearer’s vision.
The glasses combine eye-tracking sensors with lenses containing liquid crystals, allowing the prescription to adjust instantly based on where the user is looking.
According to the company, this innovation improves upon traditional bifocal and varifocal lenses, which help with near and distance vision but have certain limitations.
A set of photodiodes, which convert light into electrical signals, and LEDs work together to track the user’s eyes. These components emit invisible infrared light that reflects off the eye, and the glasses measure this reflection to determine exactly what the wearer is focusing on.
IXI says the technology represents a significant step forward in adaptive eyewear, offering a seamless visual experience without the drawbacks of conventional multifocal lenses.
