The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a public advisory urging mobile users to remain vigilant against WhatsApp hacking and growing cases of cyber and financial fraud across the country.
According to the PTA, fraudsters are increasingly using social engineering techniques to deceive people and gain access to their personal information.
These criminals manipulate victims through trust-based tactics, making their scams appear legitimate and urgent.
Warning against sharing personal info
The authority strongly advised users never to share personal details, including CNIC numbers, passwords, or one-time passwords (OTP) received on their mobile phones. PTA said once such sensitive information is obtained, it is often misused for financial fraud and unauthorized account access.
PTA highlighted a common scam in which fraudsters pose as courier service representatives and request an OTP under the pretext of confirming a delivery.
By obtaining this OTP, scammers can take control of the victim’s WhatsApp account, leading to further misuse.
Fake emergency calls
Another method involves fake calls claiming that a relative is in police custody or facing an emergency situation. Under pressure and fear, victims are often persuaded to share information or transfer money without verification.
PTA advised users not to transfer money to anyone without proper verification, regardless of how urgent or convincing the request may seem.
The authority urged the public to stay alert, verify information through trusted sources, and report suspicious activity to help curb cybercrime.
By following these precautions, PTA said users can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to WhatsApp hacking and online financial scams.
