Skywatchers around the world will witness the last supermoon of 2025 tonight, a stunning celestial event expected to shine nearly 99% bright and appear larger and brighter than usual.
The December supermoon, known as the Cold Moon, is also the final full moon of the year.
Tonight’s supermoon will appear 8% larger and 15% brighter than a normal full moon due to its unusually close approach to Earth.
Its distance will be approximately 357,000 kilometres, placing the moon near its orbital closest point, Perigee, which makes it look even more prominent in the night sky.
The moon will maintain its highest brightness until almost midnight, spreading a soft, milky glow across the horizon.
Global spectacle
The supermoon will be visible in most countries of the world, including Pakistan. Experts say that no telescopes or special equipment are needed; the event will be clearly visible with the naked eye.
The moon will illuminate the sky at 99.2% brightness in Pakistan on December 4 at 4:58pm, and reach 99.8% brightness on December 5 at 4:15am, offering multiple opportunities for sky gazing.
Last full moon, Winter Full Moon of the year
The December full moon is traditionally called the Cold Moon and is also widely known as the Winter Full Moon. This marks not only the last supermoon of 2025 but also the final full moon of the year.
The sky tonight will glow with a 99% illuminated moon, creating a “milky light” especially breathtaking in coastal areas and open fields.
This year’s first supermoons appeared in October and November. Notably, November’s supermoon was declared the biggest and brightest of 2025, setting high expectations for skywatchers eager to witness tonight’s final celestial show.
