A HAL Tejas light combat aircraft of the Indian Air Force crashed during a flight demonstration at the Dubai Air Show on Friday, killing the pilot.
The jet went down mid-manoeuvre, sending thick black smoke rising over Al Maktoum International Airport as stunned spectators watched.
In a statement, the Indian Air Force (IAF) confirmed that the pilot sustained fatal injuries in the accident.
“An IAF Tejas aircraft met with an accident during an aerial display at Dubai Air Show, today. The pilot sustained fatal injuries in the accident. IAF deeply regrets the loss of life and stands firmly with the bereaved family in this time of grief,” the statement said.

Eyewitnesses and video footage showed the Tejas performing a mid-air manoeuvre when it plummeted to the ground at approximately 2:10pm local time, exploding into flames on impact.

Spectators, including families and aviation enthusiasts, reacted with shock as emergency sirens echoed across the venue.
The crash prompted a temporary suspension of the Dubai Air Show, Arab media reported.

The Tejas is a single-engine, multi-role light combat aircraft jointly designed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA). It is known for its advanced avionics, agility, and significant indigenous design features.

The jet was part of India’s showcase at the Dubai Air Show, where it was participating in live demonstrations until the tragic accident.
