In a major infrastructure development for Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Pakistan has decided to build an international airport in Mirpur, aimed at providing modern air travel facilities to millions of citizens living both in Pakistan and abroad.
According to officials, construction of the new airport is expected to begin within the current financial year, marking a significant step toward improving connectivity in the region.
Technical feasibility, site identification
A spokesperson for the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) confirmed that the technical feasibility process for the airport has already commenced. The process includes identifying a suitable site and conducting necessary evaluations before construction begins.
“The Pakistan Airports Authority has started the process of technical feasibility, including site identification,” the spokesperson said, adding that the initial work, including technical assessments, is likely to be completed by December 2025.
Groundbreaking to follow after design approval
Officials stated that once the initial feasibility and design approvals are finalized, the groundbreaking ceremony for the Mirpur International Airport will be announced.
After the approval of the airport’s design, construction activities will formally commence, turning one of the region’s long-awaited development projects into reality.
Boost to regional connectivity, economic activity
The construction of the Mirpur International Airport is expected to transform air travel accessibility for residents of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, particularly those with families living abroad. It will also help ease travel for overseas Pakistanis hailing from Mirpur and surrounding districts.
Officials said the new airport would provide direct air travel facilities for millions of citizens, reducing their dependence on distant airports in Islamabad or other provinces. The project is also anticipated to stimulate local economic growth, create jobs, and attract future investments in the region.
The Pakistan Airports Authority has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that all technical and logistical aspects are completed within schedule. “The Authority has initiated groundwork and aims to complete all technical studies and approvals by the end of 2025,” the spokesperson said.
