As Punjab grapples with rising river levels, the Ravi Urban Development Authority (Ruda) has asserted that its ongoing projects are a sustainable solution to flood prevention.
The authority claims recent measures have already shielded nearby villages from the impact of surging waters.
Ruda’s flood protection measures
In an exclusive interview with Samaa TV, Nadia Tahir, the director of environment at Ruda, revealed that the flow of water in the Ravi River has surged to 120,000 cusecs, posing risks to surrounding communities.
She explained that several villages were saved from flooding thanks to the construction of stone dams and that the authority had been specifically designed to act as a barrier against overflowing water. "In the near future, Ruda's projects will prove beneficial for the populations and approved housing societies adjacent to the river."
Long-term projects for flood control
According to Nadia Tahir, Ruda’s development projects are not just temporary fixes but a permanent solution to future floods.
“The construction of stone dams was planned to safeguard local populations and approved housing societies. Our projects are designed after thorough environmental and hydrological studies,” she said.
Focus on climate change, research
The Ruda official also emphasized that the authority has issued NOCs to housing societies near the Ravi only after completing comprehensive environmental assessments.
She added that research on climate change and its impact on river flooding is also being carried out to strengthen long-term resilience strategies.
