Meta has announced a partnership with Midjourney, one of the leading names in AI image and video generation, to license its technology for integration into Meta’s future AI models and consumer products.
The deal was revealed by Meta Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang in a post on Threads, where he emphasized that building world-class AI products requires “an all-of-the-above approach”—from top talent and computing power to partnerships with leading industry players.
Competing in AI race
The collaboration could give Meta an edge as it looks to compete with other tech giants pushing into generative AI. Industry leaders like OpenAI’s Sora, Google’s Veo, and Black Forest Lab’s Flux already dominate the image and video model space.

Meta has previously launched its own tools, including Imagine—an AI image generator integrated into Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger—and Movie Gen, which creates videos from text prompts.
Part of Meta’s bigger ai push
The Midjourney deal is the latest in a string of high-profile AI moves by Meta. Earlier this year, CEO Mark Zuckerberg invested $14 billion in Scale AI, acquired the AI voice startup Play AI, and offered nine-figure compensation packages to lure top AI researchers.
Zuckerberg also held acquisition talks with several AI labs and even explored joining Elon Musk’s $97 billion takeover bid for OpenAI—though Meta did not move forward, and OpenAI later rejected Musk’s offer.
Midjourney’s stance on independence
Midjourney CEO David Holz confirmed on X that his company remains independent with no outside investors, making it one of the few top-tier AI labs to operate without external funding. While Meta reportedly considered acquiring the startup, the current deal is limited to licensing and collaboration.
The terms of the agreement remain undisclosed.
