The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) has approved a 100-megawatt solar photovoltaic power plant for Gilgit-Baltistan, a major step towards expanding renewable energy access in the mountainous region.
Project announced by PM Shehbaz Sharif
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the initiative two days ago during his visit to Gilgit, highlighting the government’s focus on sustainable energy solutions for remote areas. The Central Development Working Party had already cleared the project earlier, paving the way for ECNEC’s final approval.
Three-phase electricity distribution plan
In the first phase, Skardu district will receive around 19MW of electricity. The second phase will extend supply to Hunza, Gilgit, and Diamer districts, while the third phase will deliver over 16MW to the remaining districts of Gilgit-Baltistan.
Additionally, the project will provide 18MW of off-grid electricity to hospitals and government offices across the region, ensuring uninterrupted power for critical services.
Cost and completion timeline
The solar plant will be completed in three years at an estimated cost of Rs24.95 billion. Once operational, it is expected to significantly reduce dependence on fossil fuels and improve energy reliability for residents and institutions.
