Instagram has rolled out a new “Instagram Map” feature in the US, similar to Snapchat’s Snap Map, allowing users to share their recent active location with friends and explore location-based Stories and Reels.
But after a wave of viral warnings on social media, Instagram head Adam Mosseri has reassured users that location sharing is off by default and only visible if you choose to share it.
Instagram map: what it does and what it doesn’t
The Instagram Map feature can be accessed from your Direct Messages (DMs) by tapping the “Map” option at the top. You’ll see a pop-up explaining that nobody can see your location unless you explicitly share it — and even then, Instagram requires double confirmation before enabling sharing.
Mosseri says confusion has arisen because people can see themselves on the map when opening it, leading some to assume others can also see them. In reality, the map also shows posts from other users who’ve tagged their location in recent Stories or Reels — something Instagram has offered before, but now with easier access.
Location updates are not real-time
If you turn on Instagram Map location sharing, your position only updates when you open the app or have it running in the background. It doesn’t stream your real-time location — unlike Snapchat’s Snap Map, which can update continuously if you choose.
