In a historic breakthrough for women's empowerment in Pakistan, Nida Saleh has become the first female driver of the Orange Line Metro Train in Lahore, shattering gender stereotypes in the country’s male-dominated transport sector.
Belonging to a middle-class family, Nida has emerged as a symbol of courage and determination, proving that passion and hard work can pave the way for success in any profession. Her journey to becoming Pakistan’s first female train driver was not easy, but Nida overcame the odds with perseverance and resilience.

“I always had a passion for driving,” Nida said. “Operating a modern train system like the Orange Line is both challenging and exciting, and I feel proud to represent women in this role.”
Trained under the guidance of Chinese and Pakistani instructors, Nida completed advanced metro operations training before taking on full responsibilities as a regular driver of the Orange Line Metro Train. Her performance has already set a precedent and opened doors for more women in Pakistan’s public transport sector.
“This job is not only for men,” she said. “Women can also drive trains, manage complex systems, and contribute equally to the nation.”
Nida credits her inspiration to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, whom she describes as her idol. She believes the provincial government’s progressive steps are encouraging women to participate more actively in public service and professional fields.
“For the first time in the history of the Orange Line, women were given a chance on the cooperative seat, and I am honoured to be the one to make history,” Nida said.

Her groundbreaking achievement is being widely celebrated across social media and has inspired thousands of women across Pakistan. Nida now hopes more women will join sectors previously considered off-limits.
“Women must come forward,” she said. “With training, support, and belief in their abilities, they can succeed in any field, including transport and public service.”
