After the assassination of Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984, India witnessed the worst anti-Sikh in which over 17,000 Sikhs were killed and over 500 women were raped.
The riots led to the displacement of 20 thousand Sikhs from Delhi alone wherein extremist Hindus killed Sikhs selectively through voting lists.
Sikhs said extremist Hindus identified Sikhs through the voting lists and used to mark their houses in the dark of night. The next day, extremist Hindus would attack and kill the residents and set the houses on fire.
Human Rights Watch said that a systematic campaign of genocide against Sikhs was carried out under the auspices of the Indian government as the massacre against Sikhs continued for three days without interruption or pause.
The evidence proved that the massacres against the Sikhs had the support of the government of India.
India’s anti-Sikh record
There were also anti-Sikh riots against Sikhs in Amritsar in 1984, Gujarat in 1969, and Chitti Singhpura in 2000. In 2019, the Modi government jailed thousands of Sikhs during farmers' protests.
The Modi government has also illegally imprisoned Sikh leader Amrit Pal Singh for 240 days.
Sikhs live overseas are also being killed by the Indian government through target killing. On June 18, 2023, Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nagar was assassinated outside a Gurdwara in Canada.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirmed the Indian government's involvement in Hardeep Singh's murder. Ottawa and New Delhi both reduced their diplomatic ties and reached a new low.
