The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved a significant reduction in the basic electricity tariff in a major relief for electricity consumers across the country, including those under K-Electric.
The decision, made on a request from the federal government, will take effect from July 1, 2025, pending final notification.
According to NEPRA, the basic electricity tariff will be reduced by an average of Rs1.14 per unit, with the maximum reduction reaching Rs1.16 per unit. The move comes following a public hearing on the Power Division's application for a uniform tariff structure nationwide, including Karachi.
New domestic tariff structure
With the revised tariffs, domestic electricity consumers will see notable reductions in their monthly bills. The maximum domestic tariff, which previously stood at Rs48.84 per unit, will now be reduced to Rs47.69.
Protected consumers (consuming up to 200 units per month) will benefit as follows:
-
1–100 units: Tariff reduced by Rs1.15 to Rs10.54 per unit
-
101–200 units: Tariff reduced by Rs1.15 to Rs13.01 per unit
Non-protected consumers (regular household users) will also see the following reductions:
-
1–100 units: Tariff down by Rs1.15 to Rs22.44
-
101–200 units: Tariff down by Rs1.16 to Rs28.91
-
201–300 units: Tariff down by Rs1.16 to Rs33.10
-
301–400 units: Tariff down by Rs1.16 to Rs37.99
-
401–500 units: Tariff down by Rs1.14 to Rs40.22
-
501–600 units: Tariff down by Rs1.16 to Rs41.62
-
601–700 units: Tariff reduced by Rs1.16 to Rs42.76
-
Above 700 units: Tariff reduced by Rs1.15 to Rs47.69
Lifeline consumers unaffected
The lifeline tariff, which applies to low-income households using minimal electricity, will remain unchanged:
-
Up to 50 units/month: Rs3.95 per unit
-
51–100 units/month: Rs7.74 per unit
Officials clarified that taxes may still impact the final cost per unit, and the rates mentioned are base tariffs, exclusive of applicable taxes and fuel adjustments.
NEPRA has forwarded its decision to the federal government for formal notification. Once implemented, the new rates are expected to provide substantial relief to consumers amid ongoing inflationary pressures.
