The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has issued a high alert for several districts as water levels in major rivers continue to rise due to persistent heavy rains, in response to deadly flooding in Swat.
According to the PDMA, the water flow in the Swat River at Khwazakhela has surged to 77,782 cusecs, prompting authorities to declare a risk of extreme flooding in the river and its surrounding areas. The Kabul River and its tributaries have also swelled, increasing the risk for nearby populations.
The authority said the population along the banks of the Kabul River and its tributaries has been informed of the possible dangers on time.
The districts of Peshawar, Charsadda, and Nowshera have been placed on high alert amid growing concerns over potential flash floods and urban inundation. In an official letter, the PDMA has directed all relevant departments to take immediate precautionary measures to protect human lives, livestock, property, and standing crops.

“Rescue, civil defence, and emergency response agencies have been ordered to remain on high alert, especially in flood-prone and sensitive areas,” said a PDMA spokesperson.
Authorities have been instructed to identify flood-affected zones and take steps to ensure public safety. Evacuations are underway in vulnerable areas, and district administrations have been ordered to shift the population of the affected areas to safer places and set up relief camps with food, medical supplies, and temporary shelter.
Farmers and livestock owners have been advised to relocate their animals to safer grounds, particularly away from riverbanks and hilly terrains, where flash floods are more likely.
Residents have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel and refrain from using vehicles in areas at risk. The PDMA has also emphasized the need to pre-position machinery and equipment in key locations to ensure rapid drainage and road clearance in case of flooding.
The Provincial Emergency Operation Centre is operational around the clock, and citizens can report emergencies or seek information via the helpline number 1700.
