Panic gripped parts of Karachi once again on Tuesday morning as another earthquake jolted the city, marking the 11th tremor in just two days, raising alarms about sustained seismic activity in the region.
According to the National Seismological Center, the latest tremor struck at approximately 7:45am, with a magnitude of 3.2 on the Richter scale. The epicentre was located southwest of Korangi, an area that has repeatedly experienced tremors since late Sunday night.
Residents in Landhi, Korangi, and surrounding neighbourhoods rushed out of their homes in fear as the ground shook for a few seconds. Eyewitnesses reported cracks developing in walls of several houses, while elderly people, women, and children gathered in open spaces and parks. Azans were heard from nearby mosques, a common public response during seismic events in the country.
The continued tremors — four recorded on Sunday alone — have stirred anxiety among citizens, especially in Landhi, where the intensity and frequency of earthquakes have increased over the past 48 hours.
In a statement to the media, Chief Meteorologist Amir Haider Leghari said that the fault line running beneath the Landhi area is currently active, but added that there is no indication of imminent large-scale danger. “The activity is within expected parameters, but we may continue to experience light earthquakes in Karachi for the next week,” he noted.
No casualties or significant structural damage have been officially reported so far, though residents have expressed concern about the lack of preparedness and safety protocols in densely populated neighbourhoods.
Experts have urged citizens to remain alert, avoid congested structures, and follow standard safety procedures during tremors. The government has yet to issue a formal advisory or initiate public awareness campaigns amid the ongoing seismic episode.
Karachi, despite not being located on a major fault line like northern Pakistan, has experienced increased seismic sensitivity in recent years, particularly in its eastern and southeastern zones.
