The National Cybercrime Investigation Agency has registered a case against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Dr Shahbaz Gill under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), following a complaint filed by former Lahore Police inspector Mazhar Iqbal.
According to the first information report (FIR), the case was initiated after an inquiry into social media posts allegedly made by Shahbaz Gill, in which he reportedly leveled "insulting, defamatory, and baseless allegations" against the former police officer.
Inspector Iqbal alleged in his complaint that Dr. Gill used his social media platforms to spread misleading and derogatory content about his character and behaviour, which not only damaged his reputation but also defamed his family.
The FIR further states that the content shared by the PTI leader incited public misunderstanding and was intended to malign the complainant's personal and professional image. In addition to legal action, the plaintiff has also requested that the objectionable material be removed from social media platforms.
After completing its preliminary investigation, the National Cybercrime Investigation Agency concluded that sufficient grounds existed to move forward with formal charges under PECA provisions.
