Protests intensified across Sindh on Tuesday after the killing of nationalist party activist Zahid Laghari, with his family staging a sit-in along with the body on the National Highway, demanding a case be registered against police officials allegedly involved in the incident.
The protest in Naushahro Feroze disrupted traffic on the highway, while similar demonstrations erupted in nearby towns including Kandiaro and Faiz Ganj. In Kandiaro, party workers blocked the National Highway by burning tyres and chanting slogans against police brutality. In Faiz Ganj, protestors blocked the Mehran Highway, causing long traffic jams.
In response to the unrest, Sindh Interior Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar took notice of the Moro incident and sought a detailed report from SSP Naushahro Feroze, Singhar Malik. Lanjar emphasized that those who take the law into their own hands will face strict action. “Police at the district level must act promptly, and those who damage public property will be brought to justice,” he said.
As tensions escalated, a large number of police personnel were deployed in Moro, and several protestors were arrested. However, the situation further deteriorated when enraged protestors stormed the residence of Interior Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar, vandalizing and setting parts of the house on fire.
Pakistan People's Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari strongly condemned the attack on Minister Lanjar's residence, terming it an act of terrorism. “The attack is equivalent to terrorism and the malicious intentions of those hiding behind protests have now been exposed,” he stated.
Bilawal instructed the Sindh government to deal with the elements behind the violence with an iron hand, ensuring peace and order is restored across the province.
