Expensive furnace oil-powered power plants have put a significant burden on electricity consumers of Karachi Electric (KE) who have borne an additional cost of more than Rs19 billion in just six months of this year.
Consumers of KE saw an increase of Rs13.14 per unit under fuel adjustment charges in three months, according to documents.
In January 2023, the electric supply company collected over Rs21.69 billion from its consumers under fuel adjustment charges.
In February, consumers were burdened with an additional Rs16.49 per unit and then in March, this additional charge increased to Rs20.3 per unit.
The total extra amount collected from Karachi residents during these three months is over Rs19 billion.
This surcharge on consumers has been attributed to expensive furnace oil-powered power plants.
Karachi's residents had to bear an extra cost of Rs4.94 billion in April, Rs2.58 billion in May, and Rs400 million in June.
The consistent rise in these extra charges has led to mounting concerns among electricity consumers in Karachi.
The high fuel adjustment charges have become a point of contention and have put a substantial financial burden on the residents of Karachi.
