The National Telecom and Information Technology Security Board (NTISB) has issued a critical advisory warning users about the increasing threat of cyber attacks in Pakistan.
The advisory highlights concerns regarding the use of VPNs, artificial intelligence tools, and suspicious web browser extensions, urging citizens to exercise caution.
According to the NTISB, a new wave of cyber attacks has been detected, with hackers targeting personal and sensitive information. Browser extensions, commonly used by millions, have been identified as a primary tool for data theft. Hackers can exploit these extensions to steal credentials from social media platforms like Facebook and online banking websites.
The advisory has flagged 16 commonly used browser extensions, including AI-powered tools such as ChatGPT-4 and Gemini for Chrome, labelling them as potentially dangerous. Free VPNs and unverified AI chatbots have also been included in the list of suspicious software.

- Avoid using free or unverified browser extensions and VPNs.
- Install only trusted and reputable browser extensions and update them regularly.
- Use licenced antivirus software to enhance cybersecurity.
The NTISB stressed that users must remain vigilant and choose alternatives to potentially harmful extensions to protect their personal data. The advisory also warns that without preventive measures, hackers could exploit vulnerabilities to access sensitive information through phishing campaigns and compromised software.
