The Sindh High Court (SHC) held a hearing on petitions challenging the closure of social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, across Pakistan.
During the proceedings, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) confirmed that it had withdrawn the notification that led to the platform’s suspension.
Representing the PTA, lawyer Saad Siddiqui informed the court that the earlier directive for shutting down access to X had been rescinded. Upon hearing this, the court inquired whether this meant the platform was now restored.
However, lawyer Moeez Jafri, representing the petitioners, pointed out that despite the withdrawal of the notification, users were still unable to access X.
The court reiterated that since there was no active notification mandating the closure of X, access to the platform should be restored. Another PTA lawyer, however, claimed he had no information about the specific withdrawal of the notification.
The court observed that the PTA had assigned different lawyers to handle each petition, which was not right, as one lawyer had the relevant information and the other did not.
The court adjourned the hearing of other applications related to the closure of X for two weeks.
