A tiny shrine in the perilous Gata Loops in the high Ladakh region of India has gained popularity due to the abundance of plastic bottles that have been placed as sacrifices to a ghost known as the Ghost of the Gata Loops.
A big pile of plastic bottles surrounding what appears to be a makeshift shrine frequently confuses bike and motorbike racers travelling through the Gata Loops as part of their Trans-Himalaya excursions.
There is a more interesting explanation for this strange sight in the middle of nowhere, yet some mistake it for basic pollution as a result of the area becoming more and more popular with adventure tourists.
Water bottles are left at the shrine as offerings for the Ghost of the Gata Loops, a poor man who died here decades ago from a terrible cold and thirst. Many people who attempt to cross the Gata Loops do so.
Many think that if you walk by without leaving a water bottle, the ghost will get agitated and you will have bad luck on your difficult journey.
